Chapter 9 — The Man Behind the Threat

The auto disappeared into the traffic.

Rudra Rajvansh continued staring at the road long after Aaradhya was gone.

His expression was unreadable.

His fists were not.

They were clenched so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.

Arjun stood beside him.

“Sir.”

Rudra didn't answer.

“Sir, she should be safe now. The driver—”

“I didn't ask if she was safe.”

Arjun stopped.

Rudra finally looked at him.

“I asked you to find the man.”

“Yes, sir.”

“And I want the person behind him.”

“I'll find them.”

“You have until tomorrow morning.”

Arjun's eyebrows lifted slightly.

“Sir, that's—”

“Impossible?”

Rudra's voice was dangerously calm.

Arjun knew that tone.

“No, sir.”

“Good.”

Rudra turned toward the building.

But after taking two steps, he stopped.

“Arjun.”

“Yes?”

“From tomorrow, security cameras around the executive floor are to be monitored continuously.”

“Already arranged.”

“And Aaradhya's entry and exit?”

“Recorded.”

“Her transportation?”

Arjun hesitated.

“She normally takes an auto or bus.”

Rudra's jaw tightened.

“I know.”

“Should I arrange a company vehicle?”

“No.”

Arjun looked surprised.

Rudra's eyes hardened.

“She won't accept it.”

He knew that.

Aaradhya would refuse anything that looked expensive.

She had refused help even when she clearly needed it.

“Then I'll arrange security near the bus stop and auto stand.”

“Do it.”

Rudra walked away.

Arjun watched him disappear into the elevator.

He had worked for Rudra for years.

He had seen him destroy companies.

He had watched him make competitors beg.

He had never seen him memorize someone's transportation habits.

Not until Aaradhya.

Aaradhya reached home at 7:43 PM.

Her hands were cold.

Her mind was still stuck at the office.

The motorcycle.

The photograph.

Rudra's voice.

Don't move.

She opened the door quietly.

Kunal was sitting on the sofa.

A bottle rested beside him.

His eyes immediately moved toward the clock.

“Seven forty-three.”

Aaradhya froze.

“I know.”

“You know?”

She removed her sandals.

“My boss kept me—”

“You said you would be home early.”

“I tried.”

Kunal stood.

Aaradhya instinctively stepped back.

“Who was that?”

“What?”

“The man who came with you?”

Aaradhya's heart stopped.

“Arjun. He's security.”

“Security?”

“Yes.”

“Why do you need security?”

She swallowed.

“There was a problem at the office.”

“What problem?”

“I don't know.”

Kunal stepped closer.

“Don't lie to me.”

“I am not.”

His hand caught her wrist.

Pain shot through her.

Aaradhya winced.

Kunal noticed.

His grip tightened.

“You think because you're earning now, you can hide things from me?”

“No.”

“Then tell me.”

“There was a man outside the office.”

“What man?”

“I don't know.”

Kunal released her suddenly.

She stumbled backward.

“Everyone is watching you now.”

Aaradhya lowered her eyes.

“I just want to sleep.”

“You haven't made dinner.”

“I'll make it.”

“Of course you will.”

She walked toward the kitchen.

Her fingers shook as she opened the cabinet.

Behind her, Kunal muttered,

“Don't think that job makes you independent.”

Aaradhya closed her eyes.

She already knew.

That was exactly why she needed it.

The next morning, Rudra arrived at 8:31 AM.

He rarely came that early.

But today he did.

The executive floor was quiet.

Aaradhya was already there.

She sat at her desk, reviewing documents.

She looked exhausted.

Rudra noticed immediately.

“You didn't sleep.”

Aaradhya looked up.

“I did.”

“Don't lie.”

Her fingers tightened around the pen.

“I'm fine.”

“That wasn't my question.”

She lowered her eyes.

Rudra walked toward her desk.

“What happened after you left yesterday?”

“Nothing.”

“Did you reach home safely?”

“Yes.”

“Alone?”

She hesitated.

“Yes.”

Rudra knew she was hiding something.

But before he could ask more, his phone rang.

Arjun.

Rudra answered.

“What?”

“We found the motorcycle.”

Rudra's expression changed.

“Where?”

“Three kilometers from the office. Abandoned.”

“Rider?”

“Gone.”

“Cameras?”

“Destroyed.”

Rudra's eyes darkened.

“Anything inside?”

“Sir... you should see this yourself.”

Rudra ended the call.

He looked at Aaradhya.

“Stay here.”

She nodded.

Then he stopped.

“And don't leave this floor.”

“Yes, sir.”

The abandoned motorcycle stood inside a secured warehouse.

Arjun pointed toward the seat.

“Look.”

Rudra stepped closer.

A small envelope had been tucked underneath.

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Aaradhya.

Leaving the office.

Another photograph.

Aaradhya boarding an auto.

Another.

Aaradhya walking into the Rajvansh Group building.

Rudra's face became completely still.

Arjun watched him carefully.

“This wasn't taken yesterday.”

Rudra looked at the photographs.

“How long?”

“At least a week.”

Rudra's fingers tightened around one photograph.

Aaradhya walking alone.

Someone had been watching her.

For days.

“How did they know her schedule?”

Arjun shook his head.

“We're checking.”

Rudra turned toward him.

“Check everything.”

“Sir?”

“Employees. Security. Contractors. Drivers. Vendors.”

He looked at the photograph again.

“And her husband.”

Arjun paused.

“Kunal Malhotra?”

“Yes.”

“You think he's involved?”

“I think nothing.”

Rudra's voice was ice.

“I investigate.”

At 10:20 AM, Aaradhya entered Rudra's office carrying a file.

“Sir, the revised acquisition report.”

He didn't look up.

“Leave it there.”

She placed it on his desk.

Then noticed the photograph lying beside his laptop.

Her own photograph.

Her face went pale.

“Sir...”

Rudra immediately covered it with his hand.

“You know this place?”

She stared at him.

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Someone has been following you.”

Her breath caught.

“What?”

“For how long, we don't know.”

She stared at him in disbelief.

“Why?”

“That is what I'm finding out.”

Aaradhya's fingers trembled.

Rudra noticed.

“Sit.”

“I should go back to work.”

“Aaradhya.”

She stopped.

“Sit.”

Slowly, she sat.

Rudra pushed a glass of water toward her.

“Drink.”

She did.

Her hands were shaking so badly that the glass almost slipped.

Rudra reached forward instinctively.

His fingers closed around the glass before it fell.

For one second, their hands touched.

Aaradhya looked at him.

Rudra looked at her.

Neither moved.

The moment stretched.

Then Rudra withdrew his hand.

“Are you afraid?”

Aaradhya looked away.

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised him.

She had spent weeks pretending she wasn't afraid of anything.

Now she finally admitted it.

“What are you afraid of?”

She didn't answer.

“Who?”

Silence.

“Aaradhya.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

But she blinked them away.

“I don't know.”

Rudra studied her.

Then his voice softened by the smallest degree.

“You don't have to know everything today.”

She looked at him.

“You just have to tell me if something happens.”

“Why?”

The question escaped before she could stop it.

Rudra went still.

Why?

Because she was his secretary?

Because someone had threatened his company?

Because the man had been watching someone under his protection?

None of those answers felt complete.

So he gave the only answer he could.

“Because you're working for me.”

Aaradhya nodded.

She believed him.

Or pretended to.

She stood.

“Can I go?”

Rudra nodded.

Then added,

“Your shift ends at seven.”

She looked surprised.

“Yes, sir.”

“You leave at seven.”

“Okay.”

“And today...”

He paused.

“Don't skip lunch.”

A tiny, confused expression crossed her face.

“Yes, sir.”

She left.

Rudra watched the door close.

Then he leaned back.

His eyes fell on the photographs.

Something about her reaction bothered him.

It wasn't only fear.

It was recognition.

As if being watched wasn't new to her.

As if fear had become part of her daily life.

At 1:45 PM, Rudra received another call.

Arjun.

“We checked Kunal Malhotra.”

Rudra's expression hardened.

“What did you find?”

“Unemployed for almost a year.”

“I know.”

“He has gambling debts.”

Rudra's eyes narrowed.

“How much?”

“Twenty-three lakhs.”

Silence.

“Anything else?”

“Yes.”

Arjun's voice became cautious.

“He recently borrowed money from someone connected to the company that Rajvansh Group is acquiring.”

Rudra stood.

“Name.”

“We're still verifying.”

“Find it.”

“Yes, sir.”

Rudra ended the call.

Twenty-three lakhs.

An unemployed husband.

A wife who desperately needed her salary.

Someone following Aaradhya.

A stolen acquisition file.

A forged resignation.

A temporary access card.

Too many pieces.

Too many coincidences.

And one woman sitting at the center of all of them.

At exactly 7:00 PM, Aaradhya stood.

She had barely reached the elevator when Rudra's voice stopped her.

“Aaradhya.”

She turned.

“Yes, sir?”

He walked toward her.

“You're going home alone?”

“I'll take an auto.”

“I know.”

He looked at Arjun.

“Escort her.”

Aaradhya immediately shook her head.

“Sir, it's okay.”

“No.”

“I can manage.”

“I know you can.”

She looked at him.

“Then why?”

Rudra's gaze held hers.

“Because you shouldn't have to.”

For a second, neither spoke.

Something shifted inside Aaradhya.

Something small.

Something dangerous.

She looked down.

“Thank you.”

Rudra's expression remained unreadable.

“Go.”

She left with Arjun.

Rudra watched until the elevator doors closed.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Silence.

Then a distorted voice spoke.

“Stay away from her.”

Rudra's entire expression changed.

“Who are you?”

“You don't know what you're getting involved in.”

Rudra smiled.

But there was nothing warm about it.

“Wrong answer.”

“What?”

“You should have told me who you were.”

The line went dead.

Rudra stared at the phone.

Then slowly lowered it.

His eyes turned cold.

Someone had just made the biggest mistake of their life.

Because Rudra Rajvansh had spent his entire life destroying anyone who challenged him.

But this time...

They had challenged him using Aaradhya.

And that changed everything.

He didn't understand why yet.

He didn't understand the strange anger that rose whenever someone frightened her.

He didn't understand why her silence bothered him.

Why her pain made him restless.

Why seeing her walk away every evening had become something he unconsciously watched.

He only knew one thing.

Someone had entered his world.

And somehow...

They had put a target on the one person he had never intended to protect.

Aaradhya Sharma.

His secretary.

The woman he had once wanted to make quit.

The woman he had accused of playing games.

The woman he still didn't fully understand.

And now—

The woman he would not allow anyone to break.
